This elegant draidle made from Red Elm on a draidle base made from Oak is very rich looking and contains all symbols of Chanukah engraved on the draidle. Of course what would a draidle be with out "nun gimel hey shin", which stand for "Nes Gadol Haya Sham", or if you please "a great miracle happened there", meaning Israel of course, but what about the rest of the story? Did you know that in Israel the Shin is replaced with a Pey? Ever wonder why? Well the acronym is then changed to "Nes Gadol Haya Po", or "A great miracle happened HERE". I'll bet the lights just came on for a few folks.

Well then you ask how do these letters and words translate into some sort of game that children can play? I am so glad you asked. Here is the other side of the story. The "Nun" symbolizes the Yiddish word "nisht", which means "nothing". The "Gimmel" symbolizes the Yiddish word "gantz", which means "whole". The "Hey" symbolizes the Yiddish word "halb", which means half. Finally the "Shin" symbolizes the Yiddish word "shenk", which means "give".

Now, if we take these four meanings and put them to good use we can then see how the draidle game is played. First every one playing places an ante in the pot. Then every one playing takes a turn spinning the draidle. The letter that ends up determines the action that the individual player must take. If the draidle lands on the "Nun"? Then the player gets "nothing", and the next person gets to spin. If the draidle lands on the "Gimmel", then that player wins the entire pot and this round is over with. Everyone places a new ante into the pot and the game starts over again. Then the next player in turn would spin the draidle, if it were to hand on the "Hey" then that person would get "half" of the total contained in the pot. Then the next player in turn would spin, and if the draidle were to land on the "Shin", then that individual player would have to place an amount into the pot equal to that of the initial ante for this particular round of spins.

So now you know how the draidle game is played, but do you know why we even play it or where it came from? Well let me tell you a short story and fill in that blank if I may.

I am going to assume that you know the history of the Chanukah story, and if you don't I will place a short version of it some where on this page and you need to read it before this part of the story will make any sense.

The Greeks totally outlawed the Jewish people from teaching their traditions, or the Word of God (Torah) at any time for any purpose. As it turns out being a little rebellious as children so often are! NOOOO Not MINE!!! Yea, ok, not yours, but back then they used this immature nature to their advantage, and would go out into the wilderness where no one could see them to play. There under the cover of the trees they would study the Word of God (Torah). They would place one or two children on guard to watch out for Greek solders, or some other Greek spies. If the secret signal was noised for the others to here, then they would hide their manuscripts of notes and their Torahs, and begin innocently playing the draidle game to create the pretence of innocent children playing their little games, and thereby avoid detection of the real life taking place there.

This game is predominantly played during Chanukah to memorialize the "Great Miracle that Happened There", but I think that we should be ever vigilant, and focus on the fact that our God is a God of "Miracles". The Word of God is so replete with them that you can't even turn to a page and not find one. You as an individual may not see it there, but you can believe it is for sure. How do I know? Well I have looked for them, and I always find one. Proverbs 25:2 states "It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings is to search out a matter." None the less, I think that we should play this game always to ever remind us of the miracles that our LORD does on a second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, and year by year for us. It is in His nature because He loves us so much to be constantly vigilant over us and protect us.

Finally I will end with this one thought. What a wonderful way to reminisce about not only the great history of our heritage as Christians, Messianics, and Jewish brothers and sisters. But I maintain that it is one of the greatest ways, most enjoyable full of fun ways imaginable, to teach our children of the Great God we serve and their rich heritage in Him.

Blessings to you all, and we mean that from the bottom of our hearts.
