Elijah's Cup
This elegant Colbalt Blue 15 oz. goblet is engraved with the Hebrew words and English transliteration for Elijah's Cup. This cup has its traditional setting as to be placed at an extra place setting at the Passover Seder for Elijah. At a certain time during the Seder a child is asked to go to the door and check to see if Elijah is coming to the Seder. The cup of Elijah poses a problem in Talmudic law for some Jewish scholars. The debate appears to be over whether four or five cups of wine should be drunken at the Passover Seder. The verses on which the four expressions of freedom from oppression are based apparently also contain the element of a fifth expression of an additional freedom. So, we fill the fifth cup, but we don't drink from it because we reserve it for the return of Elijah. We call the fifth cup "the cup for Elijah." The idea is that when the messiah comes (Elijah is expected to precede the messiah), as is recorded in the book of Malachi.
